Kyriakos Komvopoulos is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the founder and director of the Surface Sciences and Engineering Laboratory and the Computational Surface Mechanics Laboratory. He also serves as a Faculty Scientist in the Materials Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and as a Principal Investigator at the Center for Information Technology in the Interest of Society and The Berkeley Stem Cell Center. Professor Komvopoulos is internationally recognized for pioneering contributions to surface nanoscience and nanoengineering, with broad impact on technologies spanning communications, microelectronics, information storage, and biotechnology. His current research includes nano/micro scale contact mechanics, tribology, ultrathin film mechanics and characterization, plasma assisted surface modification of biopolymers, fibrous scaffolds for tissue engineering, and flexible/stretchable bioelectronics.
